Exercise 13(C) - Mental Maths
Fill in the blanks:
(i) The sum of a number and 6 is 15. The number is ...............
(ii) If 75x−23x=1411, then x = ...............
(iii) If 65x−32x=9, then x = ...............
(iv) If 5(3−2x)−3(5−3x)=6, then x = ...............
(v) If 3x−3=3, then x = ...............
(vi) If 3 more than one-third of a number is 5, then we write it as ...............
Answer
(i) Let the number be x.
⇒x+6=15 [By transposition] ⇒x=15−6⇒x=9.
Hence, the number is 9.
(ii) Solving,
⇒75x−23x=1411 [Taking L.C.M.] ⇒1410x−21x=1411⇒14−11x=1411 [Equating numerators] ⇒−11x=11 [Dividing each side by −11] ⇒x=−1.
Hence, x=−1.
(iii) Solving,
⇒65x−32x=9 [Taking L.C.M.] ⇒65x−4x=9⇒6x=9 [Multiplying each side by 6] ⇒x=54.
Hence, x=54.
(iv) Solving,
⇒5(3−2x)−3(5−3x)=6 [Removing brackets] ⇒15−10x−15+9x=6⇒−x=6 [Multiplying each side by −1] ⇒x=−6.
Hence, x=−6.
(v) Solving,
⇒3x−3=3 [By transposition] ⇒3x=3+3⇒3x=6 [Multiplying each side by 3] ⇒x=18.
Hence, x=18.
(vi) Solving,
Let the number be x.
One-third of the number = 3x
3 more than one-third of the number = 3x+3
∴ The statement is written as 3x+3=5.
Hence, the required equation is 3x+3=5.
Write (T) for true and (F) for false for each of the following statements:
(i) If 34x+3=x−2, then x = 15 ...............
(ii) If 23y−5=−7, then y=34 ...............
(iii) If 2x+3x+4x=5x+1, then x=41 ...............
(iv) If 5x+4=5, then x = −5 ...............
(v) If −6+3x = −5, then x=31 ...............
Answer
(i) Solving,
⇒34x+3=x−2 [By transposition] ⇒34x−x=−2−3 [Taking L.C.M.] ⇒34x−3x=−5⇒3x=−5 [Multiplying each side by 3] ⇒x=−15.
Since x = −15 and not 15, the given statement is false.
Hence, the given statement is false (F).
(ii) Solving,
⇒23y−5=−7 [By transposition] ⇒23y=−7+5⇒23y=−2 [Multiplying each side by 2] ⇒3y=−4 [Dividing each side by 3] ⇒y=3−4.
Since y=3−4 and not 34, the given statement is false.
Hence, the given statement is false (F).
(iii) Solving,
⇒2x+3x+4x=5x+1⇒9x=5x+1 [By transposition] ⇒9x−5x=1⇒4x=1 [Dividing each side by 4] ⇒x=41.
Since x=41, the given statement is true.
Hence, the given statement is true (T).
(iv) Solving,
⇒5x+4=5 [By transposition] ⇒5x=5−4⇒5x=1 [Multiplying each side by 5] ⇒x=5.
Since x = 5 and not −5, the given statement is false.
Hence, the given statement is false (F).
(v) Solving,
⇒−6+3x=−5 [By transposition] ⇒3x=−5+6⇒3x=1 [Dividing each side by 3] ⇒x=31.
Since x=31, the given statement is true.
Hence, the given statement is true (T).
