(v) If x3−3=3\dfrac{x}{3} - 3 = 3, then xx = ...............

(vi) If 3 more than one-third of a number is 5, then we write it as ...............

Answer

(i) Let the number be xx.

⇒x+6=15 [By transposition] ⇒x=15−6⇒x=9.\Rightarrow x + 6 = 15 \\[1em] \text{ [By transposition] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = 15 - 6 \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = 9.

Hence, the number is 9.

(ii) Solving,

⇒5x7−3x2=1114 [Taking L.C.M.] ⇒10x−21x14=1114⇒−11x14=1114 [Equating numerators] ⇒−11x=11 [Dividing each side by −11] ⇒x=−1.\Rightarrow \dfrac{5x}{7} - \dfrac{3x}{2} = \dfrac{11}{14} \\[1em] \text{ [Taking L.C.M.] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{10x - 21x}{14} = \dfrac{11}{14} \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{-11x}{14} = \dfrac{11}{14} \\[1em] \text{ [Equating numerators] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow -11x = 11 \\[1em] \text{ [Dividing each side by −11] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = -1.

Hence, x=−1\bm{x = −1}.

(iii) Solving,

⇒5x6−2x3=9 [Taking L.C.M.] ⇒5x−4x6=9⇒x6=9 [Multiplying each side by 6] ⇒x=54.\Rightarrow \dfrac{5x}{6} - \dfrac{2x}{3} = 9 \\[1em] \text{ [Taking L.C.M.] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{5x - 4x}{6} = 9 \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{x}{6} = 9 \\[1em] \text{ [Multiplying each side by 6] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = 54.

Hence, x=54\bm{x = 54}.

(iv) Solving,

⇒5(3−2x)−3(5−3x)=6 [Removing brackets] ⇒15−10x−15+9x=6⇒−x=6 [Multiplying each side by −1] ⇒x=−6.\Rightarrow 5(3 - 2x) - 3(5 - 3x) = 6 \\[1em] \text{ [Removing brackets] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow 15 - 10x - 15 + 9x = 6 \\[1em] \Rightarrow -x = 6 \\[1em] \text{ [Multiplying each side by −1] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = -6.

Hence, x=−6\bm{x = −6}.

(v) Solving,

⇒x3−3=3 [By transposition] ⇒x3=3+3⇒x3=6 [Multiplying each side by 3] ⇒x=18.\Rightarrow \dfrac{x}{3} - 3 = 3 \\[1em] \text{ [By transposition] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{x}{3} = 3 + 3 \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{x}{3} = 6 \\[1em] \text{ [Multiplying each side by 3] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = 18.

Hence, x=18\bm{x = 18}.

(vi) Solving,

Let the number be xx.

One-third of the number = x3\dfrac{x}{3}

3 more than one-third of the number = x3+3\dfrac{x}{3} + 3

∴ The statement is written as x3+3=5\dfrac{x}{3} + 3 = 5.

Hence, the required equation is x3+3=5\bm{\dfrac{x}{3} + 3 = 5}.

Question 2

Write (T) for true and (F) for false for each of the following statements:

(i) If 4x3+3=x−2\dfrac{4x}{3} + 3 = x - 2, then xx = 15 ...............

(ii) If 3y2−5=−7\dfrac{3y}{2} - 5 = -7, then y=43y = \dfrac{4}{3} ...............

(iii) If 2x+3x+4x=5x+12x + 3x + 4x = 5x + 1, then x=14x = \dfrac{1}{4} ...............

(iv) If x5+4=5\dfrac{x}{5} + 4 = 5, then xx = −5 ...............

(v) If −6+3x−6 + 3x = −5, then x=13x = \dfrac{1}{3} ...............

Answer

(i) Solving,

⇒4x3+3=x−2 [By transposition] ⇒4x3−x=−2−3 [Taking L.C.M.] ⇒4x−3x3=−5⇒x3=−5 [Multiplying each side by 3] ⇒x=−15.\Rightarrow \dfrac{4x}{3} + 3 = x - 2 \\[1em] \text{ [By transposition] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{4x}{3} - x = -2 - 3 \\[1em] \text{ [Taking L.C.M.] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{4x - 3x}{3} = -5 \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{x}{3} = -5 \\[1em] \text{ [Multiplying each side by 3] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = -15.

Since xx = −15 and not 15, the given statement is false.

Hence, the given statement is false (F).

(ii) Solving,

⇒3y2−5=−7 [By transposition] ⇒3y2=−7+5⇒3y2=−2 [Multiplying each side by 2] ⇒3y=−4 [Dividing each side by 3] ⇒y=−43.\Rightarrow \dfrac{3y}{2} - 5 = -7 \\[1em] \text{ [By transposition] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{3y}{2} = -7 + 5 \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{3y}{2} = -2 \\[1em] \text{ [Multiplying each side by 2] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow 3y = -4 \\[1em] \text{ [Dividing each side by 3] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow y = \dfrac{-4}{3}.

Since y=−43y = \dfrac{-4}{3} and not 43\dfrac{4}{3}, the given statement is false.

Hence, the given statement is false (F).

(iii) Solving,

⇒2x+3x+4x=5x+1⇒9x=5x+1 [By transposition] ⇒9x−5x=1⇒4x=1 [Dividing each side by 4] ⇒x=14.\Rightarrow 2x + 3x + 4x = 5x + 1 \\[1em] \Rightarrow 9x = 5x + 1 \\[1em] \text{ [By transposition] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow 9x - 5x = 1 \\[1em] \Rightarrow 4x = 1 \\[1em] \text{ [Dividing each side by 4] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = \dfrac{1}{4}.

Since x=14x = \dfrac{1}{4}, the given statement is true.

Hence, the given statement is true (T).

(iv) Solving,

⇒x5+4=5 [By transposition] ⇒x5=5−4⇒x5=1 [Multiplying each side by 5] ⇒x=5.\Rightarrow \dfrac{x}{5} + 4 = 5 \\[1em] \text{ [By transposition] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{x}{5} = 5 - 4 \\[1em] \Rightarrow \dfrac{x}{5} = 1 \\[1em] \text{ [Multiplying each side by 5] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = 5.

Since xx = 5 and not −5, the given statement is false.

Hence, the given statement is false (F).

(v) Solving,

⇒−6+3x=−5 [By transposition] ⇒3x=−5+6⇒3x=1 [Dividing each side by 3] ⇒x=13.\Rightarrow -6 + 3x = -5 \\[1em] \text{ [By transposition] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow 3x = -5 + 6 \\[1em] \Rightarrow 3x = 1 \\[1em] \text{ [Dividing each side by 3] } \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = \dfrac{1}{3}.

Since x=13x = \dfrac{1}{3}, the given statement is true.

Hence, the given statement is true (T).
