Exercise 12(A)

Question 1(i)

Write the following in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

xx increased by 23.

Answer

xx increased by 23 means 23 is added to xx.

Hence, the required form is x+23\bm{x + 23}.

Question 1(ii)

Write the following in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

yy decreased by 15.

Answer

yy decreased by 15 means 15 is subtracted from yy.

Hence, the required form is y−15\bm{y - 15}.

Question 1(iii)

Write the following in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

xx minus thrice yy.

Answer

Thrice y=3yy = 3y.

Hence, the required form is x−3y\bm{x - 3y}.

Question 1(iv)

Write the following in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

xx taken away from 20.

Answer

xx taken away from 20 means xx is subtracted from 20.

Hence, the required form is 20−x\bm{20 - x}.

Question 1(v)

Write the following in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

Four times xx decreased by five times yy.

Answer

Four times x=4xx = 4x and five times y=5yy = 5y.

Hence, the required form is 4x−5y\bm{4x - 5y}.

Question 1(vi)

Write the following in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

Sum of xx and quotient of yy by 10.

Answer

Quotient of yy by 10=y1010 = \dfrac{y}{10}.

Hence, the required form is x+y10\bm{x + \dfrac{y}{10}}.

Question 1(vii)

Write the following in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

Product of aa and bb subtracted from their sum.

Answer

Sum of aa and b=a+bb = a + b, and product of aa and b=abb = ab.

Hence, the required form is (a+b)−ab\bm{(a + b) - ab}.

Question 1(viii)

Write the following in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

Quotient of aa by 3, multiplied by the sum of bb and 3.

Answer

Quotient of aa by 3=a33 = \dfrac{a}{3} and sum of bb and 3=(b+3)3 = (b + 3).

Hence, the required form is a3(b+3)\bm{\dfrac{a}{3}(b + 3)}.

Question 2(i)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

xx exceeds 14 by 5.

Answer

xx exceeds 14 by 5 means x−14=5x - 14 = 5.

Hence, the required form is x−14=5\bm{x - 14 = 5}.

Question 2(ii)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

Twice xx decreased by 9 gives 11.

Answer

Twice x=2xx = 2x. Decreased by 9 gives 2x−92x - 9, and this equals 11.

Hence, the required form is 2x−9=11\bm{2x - 9 = 11}.

Question 2(iii)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

45 decreased by yy gives 29.

Answer

45 decreased by y=45−yy = 45 - y, and this equals 29.

Hence, the required form is 45−y=29\bm{45 - y = 29}.

Question 2(iv)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

One third of the sum of xx and 4 equals 10.

Answer

Sum of xx and 4=(x+4)4 = (x + 4). One third of it =13(x+4)= \dfrac{1}{3}(x + 4), which equals 10.

Hence, the required form is 13(x+4)=10\bm{\dfrac{1}{3}(x + 4) = 10}.

Question 2(v)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

16 less than the quotient of aa by 2 equals 8.

Answer

Quotient of aa by 2 = a2\dfrac{a}{2}. 16 less than it = a2−16\dfrac{a}{2} - 16, which equals 8.

Hence, the required form is a2−16=8\bm{\dfrac{a}{2} - 16 = 8}.

Question 2(vi)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

Nine times mm is greater than 18.

Answer

Nine times m=9mm = 9m, which is greater than 18.

Hence, the required form is 9m>18\bm{9m \gt 18}.

Question 2(vii)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

7 is greater than twice pp.

Answer

Twice p=2pp = 2p, and 7 is greater than it.

Hence, the required form is 7>2p\bm{7 \gt 2p}.

Question 2(viii)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

The quotient of aa by 6 is less than 1.

Answer

Quotient of aa by 6=a66 = \dfrac{a}{6}, which is less than 1.

Hence, the required form is a6<1\bm{\dfrac{a}{6} \lt 1}.

Question 2(ix)

Write the following statement in mathematical form using signs and symbols:

Three times xx is 12 less than twice yy.

Answer

Three times x=3xx = 3x and twice y=2yy = 2y. Since 3x3x is 12 less than 2y2y, we get 3x=2y−123x = 2y - 12.

Hence, the required form is 3x=2y−12\bm{3x = 2y - 12}.

Question 3(i)

Write the following in exponential form:

a×a×a×.....a \times a \times a \times ..... taken 10 times.

Answer

When the same factor is multiplied repeatedly, we write it using exponents (powers).

a×a×a×.....a \times a \times a \times ..... taken 10 times = a10a^{10}.

Hence, the exponential form is a10\bm{a^{10}}.

Question 3(ii)

Write the following in exponential form:

Answer

When the same factor is multiplied repeatedly, we write it using exponents (powers).

r×r×r×.....r \times r \times r \times ..... taken 6 times = r6r^{6}

Hence, the exponential form is r6\bm{r^6}.

Answer

When the same factor is multiplied repeatedly, we write it using exponents (powers).

⇒3×5×p×p×p×q×q×r⇒15×p3×q2×r⇒15p3q2r\Rightarrow 3 \times 5 \times p \times p \times p \times q \times q \times r\\[1em] \Rightarrow 15 \times p^3 \times q^2 \times r\\[1em] \Rightarrow \bm{15p^3q^2r}

Hence, the exponential form is 15p3q2r\bm{15p^3q^2r}.
