Answer

Let present age of B be x years and so, age of A = (x + 20) years.

Given,

5 years ago, A was 3 times as old as B.

∴ (x + 20) - 5 = 3(x - 5)

⇒ x + 15 = 3x - 15

⇒ 3x - x = 15 + 15

⇒ 2x = 30

⇒ x = 302\dfrac{30}{2} = 15 years.

Age of A = (x + 20) = 15 + 20 = 35 years.

Hence, present age of A = 35 years and B = 15 years.
