Let present age of B be x years and so, age of A = (x + 20) years.
Given,
5 years ago, A was 3 times as old as B.
∴ (x + 20) - 5 = 3(x - 5)
⇒ x + 15 = 3x - 15
⇒ 3x - x = 15 + 15
⇒ 2x = 30
⇒ x = = 15 years.
Age of A = (x + 20) = 15 + 20 = 35 years.
Hence, present age of A = 35 years and B = 15 years.
