Assertion (A): Aluminium is obtained from its oxide by electrolysis.
Reason (R): Aluminium has a great affinity towards oxygen so common reducing agents are not able to reduce it.
- Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
- Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
- A is true but R is false.

Answer
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation — Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) is obtained from its ore bauxite through bayer's process. Since aluminium oxide is highly reactive and has greater affinity towards oxygen so it cannot be reduced by common reducing agent. Thus, it is reduced to aluminium using electrolysis. Hence, both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct explanation of assertion (A).
