Describe Abraham Lincoln's role in the Civil War.

Abraham Lincoln became President during a critical period when the Union was breaking apart and a civil war threatened the country. He took office in 1861 and led the nation to peace and reunion, fighting the war to save the Union and to abolish slavery.
