Answer
During the Sangam Age, women were treated with respect and given certain freedoms. Chastity was considered their most important virtue, as shown by the revered character Kannagi. Women had the freedom to choose their life partners, and love marriages were common. However, widows led a miserable life and were not allowed to remarry or inherit property. Despite some restrictions, women were allowed to study religious scriptures and engage in intellectual activities. Famous women poets like Avvaiyar, Nachchellaiyar, and Kakkaipadiniyar made significant contributions to Tamil literature. Women dancers were also patronised by the nobility.
