- Loss of fertile topsoil with its mineral content
- Lowering of the water table
- Drying of vegetation and extension of arid lands leading to an increase in the frequency of drought and floods
- Silting of river and canal beds
- Recurrence of landslides
- Adverse effect on economic prosperity and cultural development
