x - 1 - (x - 1)2 + ax - a
= (x - 1) - (x - 1)2 + a(x - 1)
= (x - 1)[1 - (x - 1) + a]
= (x - 1)(1 - x + 1 + a)
= (x - 1)(a - x + 2).
Hence, x - 1 - (x - 1)2 + ax - a = (x - 1)(a - x + 2).
