Let (x - y) = a.

(x - y)2 - 6(x - y) + 5 = a2 - 6a + 5.

Factorising we get,

a2 - 6a + 5 = a2 - 5a - a + 5.

= a(a - 5) - 1(a - 5)

= (a - 5)(a - 1)

= (x - y - 5)(x - y - 1).

Hence, (x - y)2 - 6(x - y) + 5 = (x - y - 5)(x - y - 1).
