Find the value of k for the following quadratic equation, so that it has two equal roots.

Comparing 2x2 + kx + 3 = 0 with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get :

a = 2, b = k and c = 3.

For equal roots,

⇒ b2 - 4ac = 0

⇒ k2 - 4 × 2 × 3 = 0

⇒ k2 - 24 = 0

⇒ k2 = 24

⇒ k = 24\sqrt{24}

⇒ k = ±26\pm 2\sqrt{6}

Hence, k = ±26\pm 2\sqrt{6}.
