Answer
Government of India is encouraging cultivation of millets because millets are highly nutritious and easily digestible, being a rich source of iron, calcium, zinc and magnesium. They are hardy crops of short duration that can be grown even in infertile, rocky or sandy soils with very little water. This makes them well suited to dry regions and their cultivation sustainable, which is why the government is encouraging them.
