The windward side of a mountain receives rainfall because moist air is forced to rise, cool, condense, and produce precipitation. As the air descends the leeward side, it becomes warmer and drier due to compression, reducing its relative humidity. Therefore, there is little or no rainfall on the leeward side, forming a rain shadow area.
