Substituting value of a in equation (1), we get : ⇒ b = 2a + 8 = 2 × -7 + 8 = -14 + 8 = -6. f(x) = x 3 + ax + b = x 3 - 7x - 6. Substituting x = -1 in f(x), we get : ⇒ (-1) 3 - 7(-1) - 6 ⇒ -1 + 7 - 6 ⇒ -1 + 1 ⇒ 0. ∴ (x + 1) is a factor of x 3 - 7x - 6. Hence, a = -7, b = -6 and (x + 1) is the remaining factor.
