Meera is in a dance class practicing in front of a flat mirror fixed on a wall. Her teacher draws a line on the floor and asks her to walk 5 steps forward. She notices that her image also seems to walk 5 steps towards her inside the mirror, but her friend sitting on a bench tells her that the image is not actually moving.
Answer the following :
(i) Is Meera's image real or inverted in the mirror?
(ii) What happens to the size of the image when she comes closer to the mirror ?
(iii) If Meera raises her right leg, which leg looks raised in the image ?
(iv) What must a surface have to act as a plane mirror?
Answer
(i) Meera’s image in the mirror is virtual and erect, not real or inverted because a plane mirror always forms an upright image.
(ii) The size of the image remains the same even when she comes closer to the mirror because a plane mirror produces an image of same size as the object.
(iii) If Meera raises her right leg, the image appears to raise the left leg due to lateral inversion.
(iv) A surface must be smooth, flat and well-polished (reflecting) to act as a plane mirror, so that it can produce clear and regular reflection.
