India's main coalfields are located in the Gondwana region, mainly in Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. These coalfields contain about 98% of India's coal reserves.
The coal found here is mainly bituminous coal, which is of good quality and suitable for industrial use.
Gondwana coal is used to produce coke, coal gas and steam coal.
