Answer
(a) Importance of Nitrogen
- Nitrogen is needed to prepare a vital nutrient 'protein'. Every living being needs proteins for its growth.
- Nitrogen dilutes the effect of oxygen present in air. Thus, it controls combustion as it does not support burning.
- Manufacture of fertilizers and various nitrogenous products.
- Nitrogen is used in the food industry for food packaging and storing food in containers as it is inert and prevents food from becoming stale.
(b) Nitrogen fixation is the process by which free nitrogen of air is converted into nitrogen compounds like nitrites and nitrates which are useful plant nutrients to produce proteins.
