(a) The International Court of Justice consists of 15 judges, each elected from a different country. The judges work for a term of nine years and may be re-elected. The Chief Justice is elected from among them for three years.

(b) The main functions of the International Court of Justice are:

  1. To settle mutual disputes among different nations by peaceful methods.
  2. Disputes among the nations regarding treaties or pacts or other legal questions are referred to it for decision.
  3. ICJ also advises the General Assembly, the Security Council, and other agencies of the U.N.O. on legal matters.
