Why are seat belts important in vehicles? Which law of motion explains their importance?

Seat belts are important because they prevent passengers from being thrown forward when a vehicle stops suddenly. When the vehicle stops, the body of the passenger tends to continue moving forward due to inertia of motion so the seat belt holds the passenger firmly and prevents injury.
