As shown in the adjoining figure, a wire of uniform thickness is rolled on a cylinder to cover it completely, without any overlapping. If the diameter of the wire is 0.25 cm, find :

(i) the number of turns made by the wire to cover the cylinder completely.

(ii) length of wire used.

Answer

(i) Given,

Diameter of wire = 0.25 cm

No. of turns made by the wire to cover it completely

=Length of cylinderDiameter of wire=280.25=2825100=2814=28×4=112.= \dfrac{\text{Length of cylinder}}{\text{Diameter of wire}} = \dfrac{28}{0.25} \\[1em] = \dfrac{28}{\dfrac{25}{100}} \\[1em] = \dfrac{28}{\dfrac{1}{4}} \\[1em] = 28 \times 4 \\[1em] = 112.

Hence, no. of turns made by the wire to cover it completely = 112.

(ii) On surrounding the circle, length of wire used

= 2πr

= 2×227×72 \times \dfrac{22}{7} \times 7

= 44 cm.

On turning 112 times, length of wire = 44 × 112 = 4928 cm = 4928100\dfrac{4928}{100} = 49.28 m.

Hence, length of wire used = 49.28 m.
