(i) We have:
5(x + 1) = 25
⇒ x + 1 = 5 [Dividing both sides by 5]
⇒ x = 5 − 1 [Transposing +1 to RHS]
∴ x = 4.
(ii) We have:
2(3x − 1) = 10
⇒ 3x − 1 = 5 [Dividing both sides by 2]
⇒ 3x = 5 + 1 [Transposing −1 to RHS]
⇒ 3x = 6
⇒
∴ x = 2.
(iii) We have:
⇒ 3x − 1 = 11 × 4 [Multiplying both sides by 4]
⇒ 3x − 1 = 44
⇒ 3x = 44 + 1 = 45
⇒ x =
⇒ x = 15
∴ x = 15.
