Two reasons why the Congress accepted the Mountbatten Plan are given below:

  1. Bitter experience of working with the League in the Interim Government had convinced the Congress leadership that any joint government with the League would be an exercise in futility.
  2. India could not afford a Federation with a weak Union Government. A strong and divided India was better than a undivided but weak India with a weak Centre.
