Answer
The Subsidiary Alliance was a system introduced by Lord Wellesley in which a native Indian ruler was required to keep a permanent British force in his territory and pay a subsidy for its maintenance. The ruler could not employ any European or negotiate with other rulers without consulting the Governor-General. In return, the British promised to defend the ruler and follow a policy of non-interference in internal affairs, though this was seldom followed.
