Reason — On calm, cold winter nights, heat from the earth's surface escapes rapidly back into space and the cool air from the mountain sides sinks into the valley. This causes a reversal in the vertical distribution of temperature, in which temperature decreases down in the valleys and is known as inversion of temperature.
