Do you think there should be limit on the number of times a person can be elected as Member of Parliament? Give your views with reasons.

Views in favour of a limit:

1. It would prevent the monopoly of a few individuals or families over a constituency and check the growth of vested interests.
2. It would create opportunities for new leadership, especially for the youth, women and weaker sections.
3. It would reduce the possibility of misuse of influence and patronage by long-serving members.

Views against a limit:

1. In a democracy, the people should have the freedom to re-elect a representative if they are satisfied with his or her performance.
2. Experienced Members of Parliament contribute significantly to law-making, Budget scrutiny and committee work.
3. The Constitution prescribes qualifications and disqualifications for membership but does not limit the number of terms.

My view: I do not think a fixed limit is necessary because free and fair elections allow the people to decide whether a Member of Parliament should continue. If a representative does not perform well, the voters can replace him or her in the next election.
