What conditions of soil favour the growth of cotton? Why?

Cotton grows best in well-drained clayey soils rich in lime and phosphates. Deep and medium black soils are ideal because their high clay content and good water-holding capacity provide favourable conditions for cotton cultivation. Since cotton is a soil-exhausting crop, regular application of manures and fertilisers is necessary to maintain soil fertility.
