Why is coal often used near the source of its mining whereas mineral oil is transported to great distances?

Coal is bulky and heavy, making its transportation difficult and expensive. Therefore, industries using large quantities of coal are often located near coal mines.
Mineral oil, on the other hand, can be easily and economically transported over long distances through pipelines and tankers, allowing it to be used far from its source of extraction.
