The Arya Samaj was founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati in 1875. Its main aim was to reform Hindu society by going back to the pure teachings of the Vedas. Ideals of Arya Samaj are :-
- Belief in one formless God (monotheism).
- The Vedas are the supreme source of true knowledge.
- Opposition to social evils like caste system, untouchability, child marriage.
- Promotion of equality among all people.
- Support for women’s education and widow remarriage.
- Emphasis on spread of education (DAV schools and colleges).
- Shuddhi Movement to reconvert those Hindus who had converted to other religions, back to Hinduism.
