Consider the following reactions :

(a) Dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide.

(b) Magnesium oxide reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid.

(c) Carbon dioxide reacts with sodium hydroxide.

It is found that in each case :

options

  1. Salt and water is formed.
  2. Neutral salts are formed.
  3. Hydrogen gas is formed.

Answer

Salt and water is formed.

Reason — As,

(a) HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O — salt and water.

(b) MgO + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2O — salt and water.

(c) CO2 + 2NaOH → Na2CO3 + H2O — salt and water.

So in each case a salt and water are formed.
