An element X has one electron in N shell, Y has two electrons in M shell, Z has six electrons in M shell and P has four electrons in L shell.

(a) Write the electronic configuration of X, Y, Z and P.

(b) Which of these element are metals ?

(c) Which two elements can combine to form :

  1. an ionic bond
  2. a covalent bond

(d) Write the formula of the ionic and covalent compound that will be formed above in (c).

Answer

(a) Electronic configuration of X, Y, Z and P are given below:
X ⇒ 2, 8, 8, 1
Y ⇒ 2, 8, 2
Z ⇒ 2, 8, 6
P ⇒ 2, 4

(b) X and Y are metals because they have 1 and 2 electrons, respectively, in their outermost shells. Hence, they can easily donate electrons to achieve stability.
Z and P are non-metals as they need electrons to complete their outermost shell to achieve stability.

(c)

  1. X and Z can form an ionic bond because X is a metal and Z is non-metal.
  2. P and Z can form a covalent bond because both are non-metals.

(d) Ionic bond
X2Z

Covalent bond
PZ2

(e) The ionic compound (X2Z) will have a high melting point because:
There are strong electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ions. So, large amount of energy is required to break these forces.
