Answer

(i) Slope of AB = y2y1x2x1\dfrac{y2 - y1}{x2 - x1}

= 413(2)\dfrac{-4 - 1}{3 - (-2)}

= 55\dfrac{-5}{5}

= -1.

Equation : y - y1 = m(x - x1)

⇒ y - 1 = -1(x - (-2))

⇒ y - 1 = -1(x + 2)

⇒ y - 1 = -x - 2

⇒ x + y - 1 + 2 = 0

⇒ x + y + 1 = 0.

Hence, slope = -1, equation of AB is x + y + 1 = 0.

(ii) Slope of AB = y2y1x2x1\dfrac{y2 - y1}{x2 - x1}

= 3(2)24\dfrac{-3 - (-2)}{2 - 4}

= 12\dfrac{-1}{-2}

= 12\dfrac{1}{2}.

Equation : y - y1 = m(x - x1)

⇒ y - (-2) = 12\dfrac{1}{2} (x - 4)

⇒ 2(y + 2) = (x - 4)

⇒ 2y + 4 = x - 4

⇒ x - 2y - 4 - 4 = 0

⇒ x - 2y - 8 = 0.

Hence, slope = 12\dfrac{1}{2}, equation of AB is x - 2y - 8 = 0.
