Answer

Given,

5, 8, (3x - 1), (4x + 1), (3x + 7)

Mean=Sum of observationsNumber of observations=5+8+3x1+4x+1+3x+75=10x+205=2x+4\text{Mean} = \dfrac{\text{Sum of observations}}{\text{Number of observations}} \\[1em] = \dfrac{5 + 8 + 3x - 1 + 4x + 1 + 3x + 7}{5} \\[1em] = \dfrac{10x + 20}{5} \\[1em] = 2x + 4

Since there are 5 observations, the median is 5+12th term\dfrac{5 + 1}{2}\text{th term} = 3rd term.

So, Median = 3x - 1

Since, Mean = Median

⇒ 2x + 4 = 3x - 1

⇒ 3x - 2x = 4 + 1

⇒ x = 5.

Hence, x = 5.
