The mean of the following arrayed data 5, 8, (3x - 1), (4x + 1), (3x + 7) is equal to its median. Find the value of x.

Given,
5, 8, (3x - 1), (4x + 1), (3x + 7)
Since there are 5 observations, the median is = 3rd term.
So, Median = 3x - 1
Since, Mean = Median
⇒ 2x + 4 = 3x - 1
⇒ 3x - 2x = 4 + 1
⇒ x = 5.
Hence, x = 5.
