Answer

Comparing equation x2 + x + p = 0, with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get :

a = 1, b = 1 and c = p.

Since, equation has real and distinct roots.

∴ D > 0

⇒ b2 - 4ac > 0

⇒ 12 - 4 × 1 × p > 0

⇒ 1 - 4p > 0

⇒ 4p < 1

⇒ p < 14\dfrac{1}{4}.

Hence, p < 14\dfrac{1}{4}.
