Answer

(i) Given,

(a + b) = 2 and (a - b) = 10

Using identity,

⇒ (a + b)2 + (a - b)2 = 2(a2 + b2)

⇒ (2)2 + (10)2 = 2(a2 + b2)

⇒ 2(a2 + b2) = 4 + 100

⇒ 2(a2 + b2) = 104

⇒ a2 + b2 = 52.

Hence, a2 + b2 = 52.

(ii) Given,

(a + b) = 2 and (a - b) = 10

Using identity,

⇒ (a + b)2 - (a - b)2 = 4ab

⇒ (2)2 - (10)2 = 4ab

⇒ 4ab = 4 - 100

⇒ 4ab = -96

⇒ ab = -24

Hence, ab = -24.
