Answer

Orange red crystalline solid, on heating, swells up and decomposes violently with flashes of light leaving greenish residue. It also gives off steamy fumes, which condense on the cooler parts of the test tube to form tiny droplets of water.

(NH4)2Cr2O7[Ammonium dichromate (orange)] Δ Cr2O3 [Chromic oxide(green)]+4H2O+N2\underset{\text{[Ammonium dichromate (orange)]}}{(\text{NH}4)2\text{Cr}2\text{O}7} \xrightarrow{\space \Delta \space} \underset{\text{ [Chromic oxide(green)]}}{\text{Cr}2\text{O}3} + 4\text{H}2\text{O} + \text{N}2
